Touch Base With Your Contract Bed

July 29th, 2011

If you are planning on buying a contract bed but would prefer to select the mattress and bed base as separate items you may well find this blog of interest.

People often think that a mattress is what makes a contract bed a comfortable contract bed, when in reality it is actually the bed base that comprises all the qualities which make contract beds comfortable and durable. Don’t forget that headboards also comprise an important part of the bed too! There are various choices of contract bed bases that you can make your selection from. The most important issue when thinking about bed bases is if it will be suitably compatible with the mattress you buy, if you are of course buying them separately.

To make your selection process easier here is a breakdown of what types of mattresses and bases are available.

There are four types of mattress that can be purchased:

  1. Pocket sprung: the individual springs reside within fabric pockets and are independent of one another. They react to the pressure and position of the person laying on it and contour to their shape.
  2. Open sprung/open coil: made from circular springs that weave together to make a single spring unit. If you apply pressure to one of them, you apply pressure to all of them. They are all connected.
  3. Orthopaedic: considered the best choice of mattress for people who suffer with back pain or have trouble getting to sleep. It supports the spin in a correct alignment avoiding localised pressure points. They are designed to mould and contour to the shape of your body.
  4. Foam: generally known as Memory Foam mattresses, they work with the person’s natural body heat to mould to the curves of the body. It is designed to relieve uncomfortable pressure points. The best type of memory foam spreads instead of sinks.

Each mattress has their own individual values and merits, but they are not all compatible with certain types of bed bases. You have to check to see how they will fit in with the bed base first. The same goes for selecting headboards to match your beds. This is key to attaining the right aesthetic and balance between your mattress, your bed base, the room and the headboard itself.

Now that you are familiar with mattress types, you should get to know what goes into your contract bed bases:

  1. Sprung edge:  the whole of the bed base where the mattress rests on has springs to make the base more supportive, avoiding uncomfortable hard edges. These types of bases tend to work in conjunction with and help the mattress last longer.
  2. Platform top: this has a hard top instead of the springs that the sprung edge has. It is constructed of wood with a padded base making the bed feel firmer.
  3. Slatted base:  the most common bed base, used on bedsteads. It is comprised of wooden slats that support the mattress offering a firmer base.
  4. Sprung slatted base: these are curved wooden slats with a natural bounce that adjusts your profile and works in harmonious synchronisation with the mattress to exert and liberate the pressure sensitive areas.

The base of your contract bed requires some careful thought and a bit of knowledge in order to be successfully selected. The mattress should be considered on the basis of its compatibility with the base. Once you know your base, you should be able to find your mattress with greater ease.
