Kiss Your Old Bed Goodnight
Everybody knows how to buy a new bed and the challenges involved when selecting the right one, but not so many people know the challenges behind disposing of an old mattress, headboard and/or bed frame.
There are, believe it or not, a few options open to you if you need to dispose of an old bed. You have to consider certain factors. The first is the environment. In this age of environmentally friendly recycling, it can be all too easy to overlook the consequences of dumping your bed in a land fill. It can take up to 100 years for the materials that make up your mattress to degrade, which causes unnecessary waste and expense, particularly if you dump your headboards too as they are often made from materials that take even longer to degrade naturally. This is not a recommended option, but it is an option open to you all the same.
Some areas in the United Kingdom offer recycling facilities for items like old beds and will take them off your hands for free! You could also consider an economic solution to getting rid of an unwanted bed by donating it to a charity that has a furniture outlet or even give it away to a homeless shelter. They often collect furniture for free. This way you protect the environment, save money and know that your old bed, mattress and headboards are going to a good cause to be re-used for the benefit of others.
You can negotiate an agreement with your local council to unburden you of the responsibility but it can be a complicated, sometimes downright frustrating, process. A local waste disposal expert is usually on hand to offer their services but you can never be sure of how they will eventually dispose of the bed itself. Bearing in mind the environment, it is important to ask these independent disposal experts, if you are so inclined to use one, just how exactly they dispose of their waste. Often, going through a local council or an independent source can cost you more money than is necessary but it may be a better option if you want to have a clear conscience when you dispose of your bed.
Selling your bed second hand through the free ads in newspapers is a great way of getting the bed out of the house while making a small profit from it at the same time. This is quite a popular option so long as the bed is in a decent enough condition. There may be problems in terms of delivery or collection however; specific issues and terms that would need to be discussed with buyers individually.
One of your best options is to go with an actual bed supplier. Usually, a service is offered where you can buy a new bed inclusive of new mattress with headboard and at very reasonable extra expense, arrange for the collection and disposal of the old one. Obviously, if you’re chucking out a used bed, you’ll be looking to buy a new one anyway, so why not kill two birds with one stone and save yourself a whole lot of time, effort and money.
