How To Tell If You Need A New Bed

July 29th, 2011

There are many reasons that we don’t sleep.  In fact, lack of sleep in our beds is often attributed to stress, heavy workloads, general worry and everything else before we ever consider it having something to do with the beds we sleep in every single night.

However, considering that the bed is the single biggest contributor to how we sleep as a nation we often ignore just how important it really is.  We wake up with neck ache, back ache and pins and needles, yet it never seems important enough for us to get up, go out and buy a decent bed instead!

Sleep deprivation caused by an old bed is actually an extremely common problem, with only one in approximately ten people saying that they actually sleep well and a staggering one in five people stating that they suffer from sleeping problems.

While every single bad night’s sleep cannot be attributed to your bed alone it’s probably a good time to look at whether your current bed is really doing your and your health justice.

Dr Chris Idzikowski, a leading sleep expert did a very interesting study in 1988 and discovered through rigorous tests over some time that simply swapping an old, uncomfortable bed for a nice new bed could give us an average of 42 minutes extra sleep a night, which obviously can contribute to a better feeling the next morning.

The trouble is, as we’ve stated – a good number of people neglect what is one of the most important parts of our lives (sleep) and when you consider that you would have no hesitation in replacing your bath if it was leaking, it does make you wonder why we are so lazy when it comes to buying a new bed! The maintenance of a bed is critical and that includes all its features from blankets to headboards!

Perhaps the fact that our bedroom is off limits to guests most of the time and that it is in its own way a ‘nest’, we probably don’t necessarily worry about how it looks.  It is also usually covered by a sheet and duvet, so effectively we never really take a look at it long enough to consider it’s over the hill either.  So, does this mean that we should continue ignoring it?

If you feel fully rested when you get up in the morning and you cannot remember your ‘sleep’ then you will be able to focus more fully on the important things in life and not waste time feeling rubbish every day.  You don’t even have to spend a fortune to get a good bed either.  Competition these days is much higher these days so you can usually pick up a good bargain if you look hard enough.

So how do you know if your bed needs replacing?

Aside from lack of sleep, there are a few indicators that will help you identify whether you need a new bed.

The most obvious question is to consider how you feel when you wake up!

Is your bed too hard?

Is it too soft?

Do you wake up with a back ache?

Do you wake up with a neck ache?

Do you get pins and needles when you sleep or wake up with them?

Does the mattress sag in the middle?  In fact, does it sag anywhere!

Can you feel the springs through the top of the mattress?

Are the edges of the mattress frayed?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then chances are you really do need to buy a new bed!

So don’t waste time losing sleep and aching – simply get up and look for a bed and headboard to match (that’s the bit that allows you to match any bed choice to your room décor) and start enjoying your sleep again!
