Eyes Wide Open – Suffering From Insomnia

July 29th, 2011

Most people know what the condition of insomnia is, but not very many actually know the kind of problems it can cause or lead on to. This is a sleep disorder often defined by a person’s difficulty getting to sleep. There are various stages that insomnia can take. Some people suffer from a mild case of the disorder called Transient Insomnia, which lasts for only a short period of time, while in more extreme cases Chronic Insomnia can lead to hallucinations and muscular and mental fatigue. These cases can last well beyond a month.

There are some sleep disorders that are mild enough to be treated successfully, often mistaken as insomnia when in fact they are simply sleep state misinterpretations. People underestimate how many hours they have actually slept, believing they have only had four or five hours when in reality they have had at least eight or nine.

Combating insomnia and milder sleep disorders can require medical treatment but there are alternative options to explore and consider when trying to beat lack of sleep.

The most obvious option is to improve the quality of your bed. Insomniacs spend all night worrying about the fact they are not sleeping and in so doing fail to recognise that part of the problem is the actual bed they are sleeping in. Specialist mattresses such as memory foam help to prevent tossing and turning during the night as they mould themselves to your size and shape. If you share your bed with someone else, it is crucial that you have a bed that supports for two people. King size is recommended. Make sure the bed is large enough and that the mattress is the right level of comfort for the both of you. Do not underestimate the benefits that good quality headboards bring to the sleeping experience, especially if you sit up in bed to read before going to sleep.

If you are not sleeping due to joint or back pain you should check the bed base itself. It needs to be somewhere between firm and soft and yield to the natural contours of your shape. The aforementioned headboard can affect your back too if you use it for support while you sit up in bed. Perhaps you suffer from allergies or asthma, in which case it would be a wise decision to invest in hypoallergenic bedding.

Consider the size and shape of your room also. Ensure that the bed you have fits the space correctly. The style, size and shape of your bed becomes the focal point of a bedroom, and indeed, for your sleeping patterns. Get the combination, positioning and comfort level right and it should aid in helping you recover from the sleep disorder.

Spending money on a bed is ultimately worth the investment once you consider how many hours a person spends in it. Those that are afflicted with insomnia will find themselves suffering from heinous and distressing side-effects without the right sleeping environment surrounding them. Think about your bed, the base and the room they are in. Once you adjust the aforementioned factors to suit your individual requirements you will be more likely to drift into a cosy, dream-like sleep and kiss that insomnia goodnight.
