According to recent studies, we all need a minimum of six hours sleep every night to allow our bodies to recover from the daily drudge and to generally recharge our batteries.
In fact that six hours is also vital to our mental health and ability to function properly during the day overall, with those who don’t get sleep consistently performing well beneath their usual standards.
Surprisingly as a nation, although we need sleep and in fact spend a good amount of our lives sleeping we are not always forthcoming in putting a lot of effort in to buying our beds.
We tend to look at the aesthetic before the practical, which often can mean that we forgo the comfort for a sub-standard sleeping experience, which in turn can then give us back ache and mean we end up getting far less than the minimum six hours sleep. Some people spend more time debating the benefits between good looking headboards than the beds themselves. Although headboards are a key ingredient to achieving a perfect sleep they are only one ingredient on a very long recipe list.
When you think that dreamless sleep can take up to half of your overall sleeping time, allowing your brain to recharge itself properly it’s easy to see why a night of constant waking up and dreams (or even nightmares) is surely going to mean your mind will not be functioning all that well the next day.
If you’re a student you can also see why lack of sleep may not be a positive thing for your capacity to learn and develop too.
Scientists do say that lack of sleep can affect your attention span, memory, overall performance during the day and apparently can even change the value we place on certain decisions.
Therefore when buying a bed you really need to consider a lot more than the look of the bed you want so that you can get something that’s not only good value for money but one that will actually be beneficial to your overall health.
There are a host of bed types on offer, that include wooden bedsteads, metal bedsteads, divans and more so in this series of blogs we’re aiming to give you advice on the types available as well as the things you should look out for.
Wooden Bed Frames
This is probably one of the most common bed frames available on the market.
In the early making of beds, wooden bed frames were actually usually made by extremely skilled craftsmen who would virtually hand build a bed from start to finish, even decorating the bed with intricate carvings on the headboard.
Usually the wood was always high quality – with things like Oak forming an integral support structure to the bed itself and of course the ability to make elaborate headboards that would last an age.
These days though, while we still use wooden bed frames and like a nice headboard, you’ll find that the designs are perhaps less elaborate and at times the wood is a composite and made from things like MDF. Although it’s important to note that there is still plenty of high quality solid wood bed frames available if you have the budget.
So what wooden bases are available?
Pine: A pine wood bed frame has been very popular with a lot of people. Not only is it a wood that can be painted and the wood stained so it has a benefit to those looking to meet their aesthetic demands.
Its biggest benefit is that while it is a softer wood it is fairly sturdy – although be very wary of buying a very cheap one as you may find this is not structurally that good in the long-term.
Oak: As previously mentioned, oak is a great choice for a bed because it is extremely hard wearing and can last for a very long time.
It is synonymous with luxury usually as it’s probably not the cheapest bed option but it is highly durable, solid and can come in some beautiful finishes.
If you’re looking for an above average wooden bed frame then oak could well be a good choice as what you pay now will save you money later.
Cheery Wood:
If you’re looking for ultimate luxury both aesthetically and in a practical sense, then cherry wood will make a great choice.
It is extremely sturdy, will literally last over a hundred years, is easy to maintain and looks very appealing as it is a wine red colour.
This is obviously for someone with a higher budget, but if you like luxury and want something that will help you get your six hours sleep a night, this is definitely the best choice of wooden bed base. Team it with a nice headboard and you’ll have something that will last good long while.
